Through July 31, 2006 in Putnam County, the chapter:
- Responded to 10 fires and other emergencies
- Assisted 42 adults and children assisted with food, shelter and/or counseling following a disaster
Notable Activities in 2006:
On Jan 18 at 3:00 pm, in the wake of a power outage combined with a cold snap, a Red Cross shelter was opened at Brewster High School. Thirteen elderly local residents were given a warm place to stay and a hot meal as temperatures dipped into the 20s. The center remained open until 8:30 pm.
On Jan 18 at 4:00 pm, a second Red Cross shelter run by volunteers and staff was opened at the Putnam Valley Senior Center. It remained open for twenty-four hours. During that time, 21 clients (17 adults and 4 children) received hot food and a warm, comfortable place to wait during the power outage. A number remained at the shelter overnight.
