Kailua is a seaside resort on the east side of Oahu, on the wind side of the island, about an hour’s drive from Waikiki. There are very few hostels in Waipahu when you travel to Hawaii. There are some tourist areas, but when it comes to convenience, stay in Waikiki. Kailua is known for their snow cones, made famous by ex President Barack Obama.

Arrive at Honolulu Airport and drive to the outriggers at Waikiki Beach Resort. Discover the beach, block by block, beach by beach, all within walking distance. For the two who travel together, you can get a small car or compact car (also known as an economy car). For $5 more a day, you save more than a midsize or standard car, and add that you also save money on gasoline and have easier parking time.

The cost of a kitchenette is worth the extra few dollars because it makes life much easier when you travel with your family. Having your own breakfast and lunch can cut food spending in half.

Most national parks in Hawaii are open, albeit with different operating hours. Guests should note that some areas of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are open to visitors, but service is limited. The Division of State Parks website has updated the amenities of the park that are open to travelers, and reviews are updated as you plan your island excursion.

If you’re in Honolulu on the last Friday of the month, don’t miss this all-consuming street food truck meeting. The event takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. at 1011 Ala Moana Blvd., and includes more than 40 vendors of tropical popsicles, Korean tacos, gourmet grilled cheese, Hawaiian blends, 5-10 ATMs and on-site portable toilets.

Many resorts and hotels offer incredible deals and incentives to guests who welcome to the Hawaiian Islands. Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club on Oahu offers discounts on long stays and vacation villas. Weekly stays start at $599 and offer up to a fifth night free and stays are all inclusive with a daily continental breakfast. Oahu Vive Hotel Waikiki, a boutique hotel in the heart of a popular beachfront shopping district, also offers discounts and extended stays. Most deals reward travelers with longer stays, so be sure to check the latest deals before you make your booking.

Another area on the east side that is worth visiting is the old town of Kapaa, where you will find old-fashioned ice cream parlours, small boutiques, local restaurants and art galleries. The town also has an outdoor market where locals sell unique gifts such as sarongs, koa wood handicrafts, Hawaiian jewelry and more.
